It was above all determined by the expansionist ambitions of France that strived to conquer all countries in Western and Central Europe, even though it constantly ran into strong resistance from England. The balance of power in Europe at that time was mainly brought about by English-French political and economic rivalry. Russia was also engaged in defending its interests in Europe when it fought against Napoleon as a member of the anti-French coalitions.June 19th and July 12th, 1806 witnessed the signing of secret declarations between Russia and Prussia, which marked the establishment of the fourth coalition later that same year. The alliance was joined by England, Sweden, and Saxony. Naturally, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte decided not to wait until the enemies unite their forces to launch an offensive against France. He invaded Prussia and defeated its troops in the twin battles of Jena and Auerst\u00e4dt on October 14th, 1806. The strong Prussian army ceased to exist overnight. Following that, Napoleon occupied and destroyed the Kingdom of Prussia. On November 21st, he seized Berlin and signed a decree, proclaiming the British Isles in a state of blockade that was later joined by Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, as well as Russia and Prussia following the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, and Austria in 1809. Forbidding all correspondence and trade with England, Napoleon planned to reduce and eventually break the country\u2019s economic power. <a
